Becoming a devoted student of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, and He is the one who convicts us of sin, regenerates our hearts, and sanctifies us (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14, Titus 3:5-7). Jesus promised His disciples and by extension to us as well, that He would send the Holy Spirit to teach us all things and remind us of everything He had said (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit is our Helper, and He desires to teach us and guide us into all truth.
John 16:12-15 – NKJV:
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 “All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Just so you know or by way of remembrance, the Holy-Spirit is on a mission. First, the Holy Spirit is on a mission to reveal Christ in and to all who believes in Jesus Christ. Second, He is on a mission to glorify Jesus Christ in and through all believers. And thirdly, He is on a mission to transform the believers’ character progressively into Christlikeness.
You see, every believer is called to live a life led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher, Guide, and Counselor, and He desires to teach us and guide us into all truth (John 16:13).
Learning from the Holy Spirit is crucial for our spiritual growth and development. Becoming a devoted student of the Holy Spirit is the key to achieving supernatural enlightenment.
By consistently listening to the Holy Spirit as a believer and embracing the role of a student, you will experience prosperity in all your endeavors. The Holy Spirit will enhance your creativity and intelligence in all areas of life. Through the Holy Spirit, you have access to the divine wisdom of God that can guide you through every aspect of your life. And the challenges that once seemed overwhelming for you will be resolved with the operation of God’s wisdom in you.
The reason why some believers seem to be stressed out, tired, confused or struggle with certain things in their lives today is simply because they haven’t learnt to be taught by the Holy-Spirit, led by Him, and submissive to Him.
Part of our redemptive rights and privileges in Christ as Believers is to be taught and led by the Spirit of God. We should always expect to be taught, led and helped by the Holy-Spirit. And to experience this, we must learn to first become a student of God’s word. The Holy-Spirit does not lead us outside of God’s word. Rather, He leads us with and in line with God’s word.
Believers who do not consistently dedicate themselves to reading, studying, and meditating on God’s word, as well as praying in the Spirit, will struggle to discern the promptings, teachings, and directions from the Holy Spirit in their heart. This lack of connection will hinder their ability to fully experience the Holy Spirit’s help and guidance, despite His willingness to always help.
Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is present to assist you in becoming more like our Lord Jesus Christ in both words and actions as you maintain a close intimacy with Him and depend on His guidance. Without a lifestyle of intimacy with the Holy Spirit, spiritual growth and effectiveness in serving God will be limited. Without His help, you will lack the strength, wisdom, and resources needed to for you live the supernatural life that God has planned for you.
In the times that we’re in today, it is very important that as believers, we learn to depend more and more on the ministry of the Holy-Spirit. He is the only one that can help us victoriously navigate through these perilous times.
So, how do we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit? Here are some practical tips:
1. Prayer: Prayer is one of the foundations of our fellowship with God. We must cultivate a lifestyle of prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to teach us and guide us (Luke 11:13). And for our prayers to be much more effective, it must always be based on God’s word. We must always spend time praying in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit not only helps us pray in line with God’s will, but also helps edify our Spirit. Such that our Spirit becomes more sensitive to the teachings, promptings, leadings and move of the Holy-Spirit within us.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20 ESV.
For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 1Corinthians 14:2 ESV.
2. God’s word: God’s word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), and it is a vital ingredient for our spiritual growth in Christ. In order to always learn from the Holy-Spirit, we must deliberately develop a lifestyle of reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God, and asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate our understanding (Psalm 119:18).
3. Meditation or Silence: we live in a world filled with different noises. So, we must learn to cultivate silence, meditation on God’s word (Joshua 1:8), listening to the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit in our hearts (1 Kings 19:12).
4. Obedience: obedience is another vital key to learning from the Holy-Spirit. You won’t be able to enjoy much of the help of the Holy-Spirit if you do not learn to be obedient and submissive to Him. We ought to be obedient to the voice of the Holy Spirit, even when He sometimes lead us out of our comfort zones (John 14:15).
Here are some benefits of listening to the Holy-Spirit:
1. Supernatural Guidance: when you learn to listen to the Holy-Spirit, He will always guide you into all truth, leading you to make decisions that align with God’s will for your life (John 16:13).
2. First John 2:1 says, “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
3. Fruit of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit helps you produce fruit in your life, such as love, joy, peace, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
4. Spiritual Warfare: The Holy Spirit will empower you with the insights, wisdom and strength you need to always resist the enemy and stand firm in your faith (Ephesians 6:10-18).
5. Comfort and Assurance: The Holy-Spirit is our comforter. He comforts you everytime and bears witness in your heart that you’re truly of God. (Romans 8:16).
6. Wisdom and Discernment: The Holy-Spirit Spirit will always give you the wisdom, discernment and enlightment you need to make wise decisions in all affairs of your life (James 1:5).
7. Empowerment for Ministry: The Holy-Spirit will always empower and energize you for ministry as you spend quality time in fellowship with Him. He’ll lead you to serve God with all your heart and also serve others with love and compassion (Acts 1:8).
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Acts 20:32.
