In Ephesians, Paul teaches on the fundamentals of living the Christian life. He emphasizes on the fact that we are “to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called” (Ephesians 4:1).
Philippians 1:27 says, “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ …striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.”
We have been called on to live lives that reflect a positive light on the gospel and that reflect our ongoing transformation as new creations in Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17.
What does it mean to walk in a manner worthy of the calling we have received?
How can we align our daily lives with God’s will and purpose?
In this piece, I’ll share a few biblical foundations of a worthy walk, practical steps to live it out, and the transformative impact it can have on our faith walk with God.
Now, let’s take a look at what the Bible says about a worthy walk.
We see the phrase “worthy walk” from Ephesians 4:1, where Apostle Paul urges believers to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”
Paul’s challenge to the church is that we live our lives in light of all we have been given in Jesus Christ.
This calling refers to our identity as followers of Christ, chosen to live holy, purposeful, and God-honoring lives. Let’s break down this concept using key biblical references:
1. A Walk of Humility and Gentleness:
Ephesians 4:2-3: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
You see, a worthy walk begins with humility, recognizing that everything you have comes from God. Gentleness, love, peace, patience and understanding are all essential in our interactions with other people, that we may continue to encourage unity and peace within the body of Christ.
2. A Walk of Obedience:
See what Colossians 1:10 says: “So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.”
Obedience to God and His word is a hallmark of a worthy walk with God. This means aligning our words, thoughts, decisions, and actions with the will of God.
3. A Walk of Love:
1 John 2:6: “Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.”
The earthly life of our Lord Jesus Christ was characterized by selfless love. Therefore, to walk worthily as Christ’s followers, we also must love others as He loved us, sacrificially and unconditionally.
4. A Walk of Faith:
2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
A worthy walk requires depending on God always, even when the path ahead of us seem unclear. A worthy walk is about relying on God’s promises rather than our own understanding.
Why Is a Worthy Walk Important?
1. It Honors God: Our lives as believers ought to always be a reflection of God’s glory. When we walk worthily, we bring honor to His name and demonstrate His love to the world in dynamic ways.
2. It Strengthens Our Witness to World: A worthy walk makes our faith real and tangible. It shows others God and His word can be trusted and depended upon. Thereby, drawing others closer to Christ through us.
3. It Strengthens Our Fellowship with God: Walking in obedience and faith in God renews our intimacy with God. It allows us to always experience His presence and guidance in spectacular ways.
4. It Brings Fulfillment: A life that remains aligned with God’s word and His purpose will always be fulfilling. Such brings joy, peace, and a sense of meaning that worldly pursuits cannot offer.
Let’s take a brief look at a few practical steps to walk worthy:
“Living a worthy walk is a daily commitment.”.
1. Spend Quality Time with God’s Word Daily: God’s word is our roadmap for a worthy walk. If you’re not regularly reading, studying, speaking and meditating on God’s word, you’ll certainly lack victory, divine clarity, strength, wisdom and direction. Confusion and uncertainties will almost cripple you. The revelation knowledge of God’s word will equip you with everything you need to keep winning in life through Jesus Christ
Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
2. Pray Without Ceasing: 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray continually.” Prayer keeps you in touch with God. It’s through prayer that you seek God’s help, guidance, express your gratitude, and also intercede for others as it were.
3. Cultivate a Heart of Worship: Worship shifts your focus from yourself to God. Whether through music, service, or gratitude, it reminds you of God’s love, faithfulness, greatness, and your trust in Him.
Psalm 95:6: “Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.”
4. Serve Others: A worthy walk involves serving others selflessly. As Christ’s ambassadors, look for opportunities to bless those around you, whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or sharing your skills or resources.
Galatians 5:13 says to “serve one another humbly in love.”
5. Guard Your Heart and Mind: Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” One of the major ways you can always protect yourself from the negative influences in our world today is to become more mindful of what you consume through media, relationships, environment, and habits. You must ensure to only allow those things that align with God’s word and standards to settle down in your heart and mind.
6. Stay Connected to a Community of Spiritually Growing Believers: Walking worthily is not a solo endeavor. You’ll have to intentionally surround yourself with fellow believers who can always encourage, inspire, challenge, and support you in your faith walk with God.
Hebrews 10:24-25: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.”
Friend, when you commit to walking worthily, your life will experience marvelous transformation. And here’s what you can expect:
1. Greater Peace and Joy: John 15:11: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
2. Increased Spiritual Growth: Ephesians 4:15: “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
3. A Lasting Legacy: Your worthy walk can inspire others and point them to Christ for generations to come.
Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Friend, I humbly encourage you in the Lord to Intensify Your Worthy Walk from Today!
