Let’s be honest- we all struggle with selfishness sometimes.
– You see it when we interrupt conversations to share our own stories.
– You feel it when we get angry over small inconveniences.
– You notice it when we ignore people in need because we’re too busy.
Self-centeredness isn’t just a bad habit – it’s a heart problem.
We see in James 3:16:
“Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
Why does this matter?
1. It damages relationships – Selfishness pushes people away.
2. It steals our joy – Focusing only on ourselves leaves us empty.
3. It displeases God – Jesus calls us to love others, not just ourselves.
How Jesus Shows Us a Better Way:
The good news? You don’t have to stay stuck in selfishness. Jesus gives us a better example and the power to change.
1. Look at Jesus’ Example:
– He washed His disciples’ dirty feet (John 13:1-17).
– He put our needs above His comfort (Philippians 2:5-8).
– He said true greatness comes from serving (Mark 10:43-45).
2. Here are a Few Practical Steps You Could Follow:
A. Start small
– Let someone go ahead of you in line.
– Listen more instead of interrupting.
– Do one kind thing daily, no one needs to know.
B. Ask God for help
Pray: “Lord, show me where I’m being selfish. Help me love others like You do.”
C. Practice Thankfulness
Thank God for what you have, it shrinks selfish thoughts.
D. Find somewhere to Serve**
– Help in your local church or an NGO.
– Visit someone lonely.
– Encourage a struggling friend.
When we stop making life all about us, amazing things happen:
✅ We experience real joy – Giving blesses us more than receiving (Acts 20:35).
✅ Our relationships improve – People trust and appreciate selfless people.
✅ We grow closer to God – He loves a generous heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
No one becomes selfless overnight. But every small choice to put others first moves us closer to Christlikeness.
Today, try this:
1. Notice one selfish thought – When it comes, pause.
2. Choose one act of kindness – Hold a door. Smile. Encourage someone.
3. Thank God for the chance to grow – He’s changing you!
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition. Value others above yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)
And now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. Acts 20:32.
